A locomotive depot can be one of the most interesting operational areas of a model railroad. Locomotives may need to be directed to different engine house, storage, servicing or maintenance tracks, and the way these tracks are accessed has a major influence on both the operation and the amount of space the facility requires. Two common ways of doing this are a turntable and a transfer table, also known as a traverser. Both systems allow locomotives to move between different tracks, but they work in very different ways. A turntable rotates around a central point, while a transfer table moves sideways to distribute locomotives among side-by-side engine house, storage, servicing and maintenance tracks. A turntable can also change the direction of a locomotive, whereas a transfer table is primarily designed to provide direct access to multiple adjacent tracks without turning the locomotive around. So which system is better for your model railroad? The answer depends on the space available, the type of locomotive depot you want to create, and whether you need to turn locomotives around or simply move them between storage, engine house and maintenance tracks. In this guide, we’ll look at how both systems work, their advantages and limitations, and which one may be the better choice for your layout. What Is a Model Railroad Turntable? A model railroad turntable consists of a rotating bridge positioned at the center of a group of tracks. A locomotive moves onto the bridge, which then rotates until it aligns with the required track. Turntables are commonly used to distribute locomotives to different engine house, storage, servicing and repair tracks. These tracks are usually arranged around the turntable, allowing locomotives to be directed to several different destinations from a single central point. An important additional function of a turntable is its ability to change the direction of a locomotive. By rotating the bridge through 180 degrees, the locomotive can be turned around before returning to service or moving onto another track. This was particularly important in steam locomotive operations and is one reason turntables are closely associated with roundhouses and traditional engine terminals. The trade-off is space. Although the rotating bridge itself may be relatively compact, the arrangement of the surrounding tracks, engine houses and access routes can require a considerable area of the layout. For modelers who want a traditional locomotive terminal and need the ability to turn locomotives around, a turntable remains an excellent and highly realistic solution. What Is a Model Railroad Transfer Table? A model railroad transfer table, also known as a traverser, uses a moving bridge or platform to carry locomotives sideways between a series of adjacent tracks. Instead of rotating around a central point, the bridge travels laterally and aligns with different engine house, storage, servicing or maintenance tracks. This allows locomotives to be distributed directly to the required track without changing their direction. Transfer tables are particularly useful in locomotive depots where several tracks or buildings are arranged side by side. Because the tracks can remain relatively straight and closely spaced, the overall facility can often be designed within a more compact rectangular area than a traditional turntable and roundhouse arrangement. They are also well suited to modern diesel and electric locomotive facilities, maintenance workshops and storage depots where locomotives usually need to be moved between adjacent tracks rather than turned around. For modelers working with limited layout space, a transfer table can therefore provide a practical and visually interesting way to create a multi-track locomotive depot or maintenance facility. Turntable vs Transfer Table: Key Differences Although both systems are used to move locomotives between different tracks, the way they operate — and the space they require — is quite different. Movement A turntable rotates the locomotive around a central point. A transfer table moves sideways, aligning the locomotive with adjacent engine house, storage, servicing or maintenance tracks. Changing Locomotive Direction A turntable can rotate a locomotive through 180 degrees and change its direction. A transfer table normally keeps the locomotive facing the same direction while moving it from one track to another. Space Requirements Turntables usually require tracks and buildings to be arranged around a central rotating bridge. This can create a wide, fan-shaped locomotive facility. Transfer tables allow tracks and engine houses to be arranged side by side, which can make better use of a long or rectangular area of the layout. In many model railroad layouts, a transfer table can use space more efficiently than a turntable, especially when several engine house or maintenance tracks need to be arranged side by side. A turntable requires a central rotating bridge, with access tracks and engine house tracks spreading out around it. This creates a wide footprint that works well for a traditional roundhouse scene but can be difficult to fit into a narrow or rectangular layout area. A transfer table works differently. Because the bridge moves sideways, the engine house, storage and maintenance tracks can remain relatively straight and closely spaced. This makes it possible to create a multi-track locomotive facility within a longer, narrower footprint. The actual space required will always depend on the number of tracks, locomotive length and layout design, but for modelers working with limited room, a transfer table can often provide a more compact solution. Which Is Better for Your Layout? There is no single best choice for every model railroad. The right option depends on how you want the locomotive facility to operate and how much space is available. Choose a turntable if: You need to turn locomotives around You are building a traditional steam-era engine terminal You want to model a roundhouse or radial track arrangement You have enough space for the wider footprint Choose a transfer table if: You want to move locomotives between side-by-side engine house, storage or maintenance tracks You do not need to change the direction of the locomotive You are building a diesel, electric or modern maintenance facility Your available space is long, narrow or rectangular You want to fit several service tracks into a more compact area For many modelers, the decision comes down to one simple question: Do you need to turn the locomotive, or do you mainly need to distribute it between adjacent tracks? If turning the locomotive is essential, a turntable is usually the better choice. If efficient access to multiple side-by-side tracks is the priority, a transfer table may be the more practical solution. What About Programmable Transfer Tables? A motorized or programmable transfer table can make locomotive depot operations much easier, especially when several tracks need to be accessed regularly. Instead of positioning the bridge manually each time, a programmable system can store individual track positions and move the bridge automatically to the selected destination. This helps provide accurate and repeatable alignment between the moving bridge and the engine house, storage or maintenance tracks. For many layouts, the best choice is therefore determined less by appearance and more by operation: Do you need to turn the locomotive, or do you need efficient access to several adjacent tracks? Understanding that difference makes it much easier to choose the right system for your model railroad.
